The African Union (AU) has raised alarms over a series of attacks in the central Red Sea, warning that they pose serious threats to global security and Africa’s economic stability.

In a statement, the AU Commission said recent assaults targeting critical infrastructure in the region have intensified, disrupting trade routes and energy supplies. The Commission stressed that these attacks have immediate repercussions for the continent’s economy and broader international security.

The situation follows ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with conflicts spilling into Red Sea corridors over the past week. Reports indicate that Iran has targeted U.S. military bases and key infrastructure in countries bordering the Red Sea as a retaliatory measure.

“These attacks endanger vital trade and transport activities in the region and highlight the Red Sea’s strategic importance for Africa’s economic and security interests,” said AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Yusuf Talat on Monday, February 30, 2018 (Ethiopian calendar).

The AU urged regional and international stakeholders to take coordinated measures to secure the Red Sea and safeguard critical commercial and energy routes.
