The Ethiopian government has confirmed that its plans to develop nuclear power as part of the country’s long-term energy strategy will require at least ten years to come to fruition. Officials emphasized that the timeline reflects the complexity of establishing nuclear infrastructure, ensuring safety standards, and building the necessary technical and regulatory frameworks.
Ethiopia has been actively exploring nuclear energy to diversify its energy mix, reduce dependence on hydropower, and support industrial and economic growth. The government stressed that the project will be pursued in line with international safety standards and through cooperation with global partners experienced in nuclear technology.
While nuclear energy offers a potential solution to the country’s growing electricity demand, officials noted that significant investments in human resources, regulatory capacity, and safety mechanisms are essential before any reactor construction can begin.
The announcement underscores Ethiopia’s broader strategy to expand renewable and alternative energy sources, complementing hydropower, solar, and wind initiatives, while addressing future energy security needs.
