The Ethiopian Religious Institutions Council has extended its heartfelt condolences following the passing of Grand Mufti Haji Omar Idris, a revered religious leader and national figure.
In a statement issued on the occasion, the Council conveyed its deep sympathy to the Grand Mufti’s family, friends, and all Ethiopians, recognizing his lifetime of service and leadership.
The Council described Haji Omar Idris as a “great father and leader, a national elder who stood above divisions of faith, ethnicity, and nationality.” It emphasized that his wisdom and guidance transcended religious boundaries, earning him respect and affection across communities.
Recalling one of his memorable teachings, the Council noted his message to all Ethiopians: “Be a human being; the body comes first.”
Haji Omar Idris had previously served as President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs of Ethiopia and was a guardian figure within the Ethiopian Religious Institutions Council.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions to his faith and his nation, the Council has called for his funeral to be conducted with special honor and protocol, in accordance with Islamic law and traditions.
It also reaffirmed its readiness to coordinate with the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to ensure the proper observance of the funeral arrangements befitting his legacy.
