KEYIR NEWS  — Eritrea’s Information Minister, Yemane G. Meskel, has taken aim at Ethiopia’s renewed calls for sea access, describing them as “beyond the realm of rationality.”

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Meskel reposted an article from RedSeaBeacon.com titled “Ethiopia’s Assab Port Obsession.” The piece argues that Ethiopia’s insistence on reclaiming access to the Red Sea, particularly through Eritrea’s Assab Port, stems from “emotion, frustration, and political failure.”

Quoting the article, Meskel wrote: “The adage that ‘necessity knows no law’, which seems to obsess many Ethiopian elites, is inapplicable when it comes to immutable international norms.” He stressed that such aspirations cannot override the sanctity of colonial-era borders or justify attempts to redraw them.

The remarks come as regional debates intensify over maritime access, sovereignty, and integration in the Horn of Africa—issues that remain sensitive in the wake of historical tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
