ADDIS ABABA — The African Union Commission on Friday congratulated the Republic of South Africa on assuming the chairmanship of the Group of 20 and for hosting the global summit on African soil for the first time, calling it a historic moment that underscores the continent’s growing influence in international affairs.

In a statement, the African Union praised South Africa’s “exceptional leadership” in advancing the priorities of the Global South, promoting sustainable development, and pushing for a more inclusive approach to global governance.

“South Africa’s role as G20 Chair reflects its commitment to equality, human rights, and the rule of law — values deeply aligned with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” the Commission said.

Long regarded as one of Africa’s most robust democracies, South Africa prides itself on its diverse and multicultural society. Its Constitution, adopted after the end of apartheid in 1996, enshrines equality and freedom for all citizens.

The Commission urged international partners to work with South Africa and the wider continent “on the basis of mutual respect and constructive cooperation,” saying that such engagement would help strengthen Africa’s contribution to global peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
