Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Addis Ababa today on a historic two-day working visit, underscoring the deepening political, economic, and people-to-people ties between Ethiopia and India.

Prime Minister Modi was received at Bole International Airport by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Timothewos (PhD), and other senior Ethiopian government officials.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold high-level bilateral talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with discussions focusing on investment expansion, agriculture, mining development, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity—sectors viewed as critical to Ethiopia’s long-term economic transformation and job creation agenda.

Earlier, Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia Anil Kumar Rai stated that the talks would center on strengthening strategic cooperation and unlocking new opportunities for Indian investment in Ethiopia, particularly in manufacturing, agribusiness, and technology-driven sectors.

In a rare diplomatic highlight, the House of People’s Representatives announced that Prime Minister Modi will address the 6th Joint Session of the House and participate in commemorations marking the 5th Anniversary of the Federal Parliament, signaling the growing importance of Ethiopia–India relations at the parliamentary level.

Prime Minister Modi is also expected to engage with members of the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia, estimated at around 2,500 people, and attend cultural and community events organized in his honor. The Indian community has long played a significant role in Ethiopia’s commercial, industrial, and educational sectors.

For Ethiopian and diaspora audiences, the visit is widely seen as a signal of renewed international engagement with Ethiopia, particularly in areas of technology transfer, skills development, and South–South cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit reinforces Ethiopia’s positioning as a key partner for emerging economies and highlights India’s growing diplomatic and economic footprint in Africa.
