KEYIR NEWS — The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) has announced that millions of migratory birds enter Ethiopia each year, underscoring the country’s critical role as a major destination and transit zone for migratory species along the East African Rift Valley flyway.
The announcement coincides with the global celebration of the 20th World Migratory Bird Day, observed in Ethiopia for the 15th time under the theme “Good Habitat: Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities.” The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting migratory birds and their habitats, while promoting international cooperation for their conservation.
According to Fantaye Negash, Warden of Protected Areas and National Parks at EWCA, migratory birds travel thousands of kilometers each year in search of favorable feeding and breeding conditions, as well as to escape extreme environmental factors such as cold or heat. Ethiopia’s diverse ecosystems—ranging from highland wetlands to Rift Valley lakes—make it one of Africa’s most attractive destinations for these seasonal travelers.
Fantaye noted that an estimated 1.5 million migratory birds utilize the Ethiopian section of the Rift Valley corridor annually. Approximately 199 species migrate from Europe and Asia, while 47 species arrive from different parts of Africa, spending several months in the country before returning to their native habitats.
Although precise statistics are difficult to obtain, the migratory patterns demonstrate Ethiopia’s ecological significance within the global biodiversity network. Many of these species undertake both short- and long-distance journeys, crossing continents, deserts, and oceans to reach Ethiopian habitats that provide food security and nesting grounds.
Officials emphasized that continued conservation efforts, habitat protection, and community awareness are vital to maintaining Ethiopia’s reputation as a sanctuary for migratory birds and ensuring the sustainability of its rich natural heritage.
