ADDIS ABABA - Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that Ethiopia is now ranked among the world’s fastest-growing economies, citing strong macroeconomic performance and positive international forecasts.

Speaking on Tuesday at the 10th regular session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, the Prime Minister responded to questions from lawmakers and outlined key developments in Ethiopia’s current economic trajectory. He noted that the country’s rapid growth places it among leading global performers.

According to projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ethiopia is expected to record economic growth of 9.3 percent in 2026. Prime Minister Abiy welcomed the forecast, describing it as a clear indication of the effectiveness of the government’s ongoing macroeconomic reform programme.

He further stated that in 2025, five of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies will be African countries, with Ethiopia ranked at the top of that list. The Prime Minister highlighted that Ethiopia is currently experiencing a growth rate of 9.2 percent, underscoring that this momentum is the direct result of structural and macroeconomic reforms implemented in recent years.

Referring to the IMF’s latest report, Prime Minister Abiy said the institution had revised Ethiopia’s projected growth upward by 0.1 percentage points—from the government’s initial estimate of 9.2 percent to 9.3 percent—a development he described as encouraging and confidence-boosting.

The Prime Minister emphasised that this sustained economic expansion strengthens Ethiopia’s influence and standing at both continental and global levels, reaffirming the country’s role as an emerging economic force in Africa and beyond.
