Addis Ababa — The Ethiopian Federal Police have introduced a new vehicle license plate system, replacing the previous plates that had been in use for more than 50 years.
According to Assistant Commissioner Eshetu Fita, Head of the Federal Police Logistics Directorate, the former license plates lacked uniformity and were not suitable for effective monitoring and control.
The newly introduced license plates are integrated with modern technology and linked to a centralized database. They also contain secure, non-replicable identification features, which are expected to significantly enhance vehicle monitoring and improve operational efficiency.
The new system will also support crime investigation and tracking efforts, enabling the Federal Police to provide better and more efficient public services.
Officials noted that the initiative will strengthen the international competitiveness of the Ethiopian Federal Police and aligns with Ethiopia’s Digital 2030 strategy, which aims to integrate technology across public services.
