Ethiopia Celebrates National Flag Day Under the Theme of Unity, Sovereignty, and Prosperity

KEYIR NEWS — Ethiopia is marking the 18th National Flag Day today under the inspiring theme, “Our Flag is the Tidings of a Great Era of Prosperity for Ethiopia, for Our National Unity, Our Sovereignty, and the Ethiopian Renaissance!”

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR), in a statement released ahead of the celebration, described the national flag as a powerful emblem of sovereignty, unity, and development, symbolizing the shared identity and resilience of the Ethiopian people. The statement emphasized that the flag embodies the spirit of freedom, national pride, and historical continuity, handed down by Ethiopia’s forefathers who fought to defend the nation’s independence and dignity.

According to the proclamation, National Flag Day is celebrated every year on the first Monday of October (Ethiopian Calendar), as stated in Article 2 of Flag Proclamation No. 863/2006 (as amended). The commemoration serves as a reminder of the nation’s collective responsibility to uphold the honor and dignity of the flag while safeguarding Ethiopia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The HPR’s statement urged citizens to preserve the values represented by the flag, national unity, solidarity, and prosperity, and to pass these ideals on to the next generation. This year’s observance is being held at federal, regional, and city administration levels, accompanied by discussions and public events that highlight Ethiopia’s ongoing journey toward growth and renaissance.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the national flag was hoisted across government institutions, regional states, defense camps, and Ethiopian embassies worldwide. The day’s celebrations include swearing-in ceremonies, cultural performances, and community gatherings reaffirming Ethiopians’ commitment to national pride and progress.
